I love when families document their togetherness and love through an extended family photo shoot. Because, let’s be honest – coordinating a large group of people to commit to a photo session can be a daunting task…but it is so worth it and much easier than you think. Extended family photo shoots are perfect for reunions, milestone birthdays, or groups of families with 7 members and above. Extended family photo sessions are similar to family photo shoots, except we focus on large group shots first and follow with mini photo shoots of each family included in the session. I come prepared with a list of all the different groupings we want to achieve, and in between we get playful photos of uncles playing with nieces and nephews, and grandmothers loving on their grand children. It moves quickly and the energy of everyone in one place makes for a fun evening!
Location
I find that the gorgeous rural locations of Austin with big open fields, beautiful trees, and unique creeks, provide the best setting for large groups. However if you have somewhere specific in mind, I am always open to new locations.
Scheduling
When planning your extended family portraits, it’s never too early to book! My calendar fills up quickly, and it’s always best to reach out sooner rather than later. Keep in mind, outdoor family sessions are done the hour before sunset for optimal lighting.
What to Wear
Don’t let clothing coordination overwhelm you! I recommend simple, classic apparel that is comfortable and reflects your style. Coordinating a large group can be challenging. My best advice is go for blue! Most people can find some shade of blue they feel good in. All shades of blue coordinate well together (light, navy, even aqua) so there is freedom of choice for everyone with a common color tying the photos together. Most other colors go well with blue too, so if someone wants to be different and wear yellow or pink, the photos will still look great!
