Top 3 Awe-Inspiring Features that Create a Perfect Location for a Family Photoshoot, Plus a Feature on Redfin!

Family Photos in Austin Tx-133

Family photos are some of my favorites to capture! And the location of the shoot makes a big difference in how the photos turn out. Families shouldn’t take this part of the photoshoot lightly when making their decision. For example, if there is a park by your house, it may be convenient because it is nearby, but that doesn’t mean it is the right place to shoot!

I have a long list of Austin photo locations I’ve honed over the years. Location contributes so much to the success of a photoshoot – it’s not something I take lightly! In fact, if a client wants to shoot at a location I haven’t seen or shot at, most of the time I will go look at it first to make sure it provides the pop I want for my families! There are a few key items I look for in scouting a location to ensure it is going to be great!

  1. Light – First, and foremost I look at light…because after all, photography is the art of painting with light. Is there backlight, sidelight, direct light? What does the light offer as far as options for poses? Is it coming from the correct direction? How many different types of light are there to add variety to the gallery? Can I play with the light and add some cool, unique features to the photos?
  2. Backgrounds –  What type of backgrounds does the location offer? Is there a wide variety, texture and strong color? How much walking is there from the parking lot to the location and between the different backgrounds? Is it family friendly and safe? How crowded is it?
  3. What wow factor does the location offer? Is there something that makes it unique? Is it playful and exciting?

These are some of the questions I ask myself as I study a location. And to be honest, rarely is a location perfect. But, I’ve found some that come pretty close!! Below are my top 3 current favorite locations for photoshoots:

Bull Creek District Park

Bull Creek District Park is magical! It is easy access off the freeway along with easy parking! Within a short walking distance there are so many different backgrounds and opportunities to capture genuine emotion. It is beautiful year round with gorgeous light and a variety of vegetation. Plus the water adds a playful element for adventurous families! To see more of why I like Bull Creek, see Lindsay Herkert Photo Co’s feature on Redfin.

The 360 Bridge Field

The 360 Bridge Field takes advantage of the iconic Austin Pennybacker Bridge. You can’t go wrong with this location! The light is fantastic! From backlight to sidelight to direct light – it all plays a beautiful part in creating magical photos for your family. Plus there is a wide variety of backgrounds with the Lake Austin, an open field and the bridge. An easy place to bring small children with close parking and freedom to run!

Commons Ford Ranch

A gorgeous Austin location offering a unique old barn with great texture, a beautiful open field and the best backlight and tall grass ever! I just love this location so much and sing it’s praises to my clients often! Full of charm and ease, it cannot be beat!
