Austin has no shortage of beautiful photography locations, but one of my personal favorites as an Austin Family Photographer is what I like to call the 360 Bridge field.
This location sits directly underneath the famous Pennybacker Bridge along Lake Austin, and it offers an incredible amount of variety in a relatively small area.

Where Is the 360 Bridge Photo Location in Austin?
The 360 Bridge photo location Austin photographers often talk about sits in the field near the building currently known as Plaza on the Lake.
Many longtime Austinites remember the building when Revionics was located there. The field sits just west of the building and opens up toward Lake Austin.
Parking is usually easy. I typically have clients park in the Plaza on the Lake parking lot and then we simply walk around to the west side of the building where the field opens up.
From there, the location gives you access to both the open grassy field and the shoreline along Lake Austin.

When Is the Best Time to Shoot at the 360 Bridge Field?
One thing many photographers don’t realize about the 360 Bridge photo location Austin families love is that it is not always accessible.
During boating season—typically from late March through September—a security guard is often present.
The field sits right next to Lake Austin, and boats frequently dock along the shoreline. The security presence helps prevent people from coming up from the lake onto the field.
Because of this, fall and winter tend to be the best seasons to shoot here.
Not only is security typically not present during those months, but the location photographs much better as well.
During summer there is significantly more boat traffic in the background, which can make editing more difficult and distract from the natural scenery.
In fall and winter the field feels quieter, cleaner, and more peaceful—perfect conditions for photography.
What Should Photographers Warn Clients About at This Location?
One important thing to know about the 360 Bridge photo location Austin photographers use is something most people wouldn’t expect: burrs in the grass.
The field contains small burrs that can be extremely sharp, especially after rain. They can easily catch on clothing and shoes.
Because of this, I always give clients a few wardrobe guidelines before their session.
Closed-toed shoes are essential, especially for children who may be running around the field.
I also recommend avoiding long, sweeping dresses. The burrs can get caught in the fabric and scrape against legs, which is definitely not the experience you want during a family photo session.
Once clients know what to expect, it’s an easy fix—but it’s worth mentioning ahead of time.
How Do I Structure a Session at the 360 Bridge Photo Location Austin?
One of the reasons I love the 360 Bridge photo location Austin photographers frequently recommend is that it naturally allows you to move through a session in stages.
Start With Backlit Field Photos
I usually begin sessions on the west side of the building where a large tree sits near the field.
At first glance the area may not look particularly remarkable, but the backlighting here can be absolutely beautiful.
The open field allows the sun to filter through the grass, creating soft, glowing light that works wonderfully for family portraits.

Move Toward the Water Along Lake Austin
After starting in the field, I gradually move families toward the shoreline along Lake Austin.

The reflections on the water, the soft evening light, and the surrounding trees create a really peaceful environment for portraits.
During the fall months, the trees along the lake become especially beautiful and add incredible color to the background.
End With Sunset Photos at the Bridge
The final part of the session is the most important.
The iconic 360 Bridge photos only look their best once the sun drops low enough behind the landscape.
If you photograph the bridge too early, the lighting becomes uneven.
Your subjects will often be in shade while the bridge itself is still catching bright highlights from the sun.
Waiting until the sun drops a little lower creates more even light across the entire scene.
This is when the bridge catches the warm glow of sunset and the images become truly stunning.
Because of this timing, I usually plan for about a 45-minute session at this location and make sure the final moments happen as the sun dips lower in the sky.
