Woodlands Park Austin Photo Location: A Hidden Gem for Family Photography

If you’re searching for beautiful spots for family photos in Austin, one location I love recommending is the Woodlands Park Austin photo location in the River Place neighborhood.
This park feels like one of Austin’s best-kept secrets. It’s tucked away off FM 2222 between Loop 360 and 620, and because it sits inside the River Place community, many people simply don’t know it exists.
As an Austin family photographer, I’m always looking for locations that check a few important boxes: beautiful light, variety within a short distance, and a setting that doesn’t feel crowded. The Woodlands Park Austin photo location hits all three of those perfectly.
In this post, I’ll walk you through where it is, why I love photographing families here, and exactly how I approach a photo session at this hidden Austin location.
TL;DR
The Woodlands Park Austin photo location in River Place is a quiet and scenic spot perfect for family photography. It offers fallen tree benches, canopy paths with water views, and beautiful fall foliage. The light becomes soft and even as the sun drops behind the hill, making it ideal for easy portrait lighting. Sessions start near the lake inlet and can extend to a nearby bridge for added variety.
Where Is the Woodlands Park Austin Photo Location?
The Woodlands Park Austin photo location sits inside the River Place neighborhood in Northwest Austin.
To reach it, you drive into River Place from FM 2222, then head down the hill toward Lake Austin. The park is located near the bottom of the hill and includes a small parking area close to some tennis courts.
Because it’s slightly tucked away, this park never feels overly busy, which is one of the main reasons I love photographing here.

Why Do Photographers Love the Woodlands Park Austin Photo Location?
There are a few reasons the Woodlands Park Austin photo location works so well for photography.
First, it’s peaceful. You’re rarely competing with other photographers for space, which helps sessions feel relaxed and natural.
Second, the location offers a surprising amount of visual variety in a very small area. Within a short walking distance, you can photograph:
-
Water views along a small Lake Austin inlet
-
Large canopy trees with beautiful paths
-
Rustic fallen trees turned into benches
-
Fall foliage that can be surprisingly vibrant
-
A nearby bridge with strong leading lines
For photographers, that variety makes it easy to deliver a gallery that feels full and diverse without having to drive between locations.
This is exactly why the Woodlands Park Austin photo location has become one of my favorite places for family sessions.
How Do You Start a Photo Session at Woodlands Park?
When I photograph families at the Woodlands Park Austin photo location, I start by having clients park near the tennis courts in the small lot at the top of the hill.
From there, we walk down toward the water.
There’s a sidewalk path that eventually transitions into a dirt path, and while the walk is short, it does involve a hill. Because of that, this location works best for families who can comfortably walk down and back up the hill.
Once we reach the bottom, the scenery opens up beautifully.
One of my favorite features here is the collection of fallen trees that have been turned into benches. They’ve been sanded and painted, so they’re safe to sit on and create really unique textures in photos.
They give families a natural place to sit together and instantly add something visually interesting to the images.
What Makes the Fall Colors at Woodlands Park So Special?
During the fall months, the Woodlands Park Austin photo location becomes especially beautiful.
The canopy trees lining the path begin to turn bright shades of yellow and gold. Combined with the water in the background, the whole scene starts to feel almost cinematic.
Fall foliage in Austin can be unpredictable, so I often keep an eye on this spot throughout the season. If I notice the leaves changing here while I have sessions scheduled elsewhere, I sometimes let families know they have the option to move their shoot to Woodlands Park.
When the color peaks, it becomes one of the best fall photography spots in Austin.
Can You Add More Variety to a Session at Woodlands Park?
Absolutely.
If the session is going well and the kids still have energy, I sometimes add a second location within walking distance of the Woodlands Park Austin photo location.
After finishing near the lake inlet, we walk back up the hill and cross River Place Boulevard. It sounds like a busy road, but it’s actually very calm and easy to cross.
On the other side, there’s a man-made lake with a small bridge.
That bridge creates beautiful leading lines in photographs and adds a completely different visual style to the gallery. It’s also a fantastic spot for senior portraits, giving seniors a modern, architectural backdrop that contrasts nicely with the natural environment.
Adding the bridge allows photographers to deliver a gallery that feels even more diverse.
What Is the Light Like at the Woodlands Park Austin Photo Location?
Lighting is one of the things that makes the Woodlands Park Austin photo location particularly easy to photograph.
Because there’s a hill behind the parking lot on the west side, the sun drops behind it fairly early.
That means two things:
First, if you want backlit images, you need to capture them quickly at the beginning of golden hour before the sun disappears behind the hill.
Second, once the sun drops, the entire park becomes filled with soft, even light.
For photographers, this kind of flat light can be incredibly helpful. It allows you to move families through different groupings without constantly chasing the sun or dealing with harsh highlights.
That’s also why this location works well for extended family sessions—as long as everyone can comfortably walk down the hill.

Final Thoughts on the Woodlands Park Austin Photo Location
The Woodlands Park Austin photo location is one of those rare places that quietly checks every box for a great portrait session.
It’s peaceful, visually diverse, and offers beautiful lighting conditions for photographers. Between the water views, rustic benches, canopy trees, and nearby bridge, it’s easy to create a gallery with a lot of variety in a relatively small space.

More than once I’ve had families ask, “Where did you find this location?”
