My 9 Favorite Things About Photographing Newborns

Newborn photography is one of my favorite types of photography. Whether it’s capturing the new normal of the family through lifestyle photos or posing the newborn to show off their sleepy freshness, there isn’t anything that compares to photographing newborns. Just for fun, I though I’d list off my 9 favorite aspects of this part of being a photographer.

Oh, and I’ve got a special surprise at the end of this post!  I’m taking part in a blog circle with some photographer friends of mine.  We’re linking to each other’s posts, so you can check out what they’re up to.  This week, I’m linking to a fabulous  Lifestyle/Documentary Photographer and Educator  in Nashville and her post is about about Learning all about Lu Huang and her composite work.
But first, let’s talk about all the fun aspects of a newborn shoot!!

#9.  As a mom of 3, I can honestly say that the birth of each of my children was by far the best days of my life. When I look at their newborn photos, I feel that pure joy all over again. I love that my job is to capture this time for my clients. I know that the photos will bring them the same kind of joy they brought me.

#8. I love newborns. If I could have 10 more babies, I would! Since that isn’t possible, I love that I get my baby fix when I get to photograph them.

#7. Capturing the new family together. There is a unique energy to each family and I love seeing it come through in the photos.

#6. That new baby smell. Hello!

#5. That surprise smile. It almost always happens. They settle into a deep sleep and for about 2 seconds, will pop out a little smile. It just kills me.

#4. Hearing about the story of the birth. It is one of the most exciting days in new parents lives. All the stories are so different and I love sharing in the excitement with the parents.

#3. Seeing sibling reactions. Oh my goodness! It is just so fun to watch and capture the genuine joy in siblings getting to know their new little brother or sister. It never fails to make my heart skip a beat!

#2. Choosing simple props to show off the adorableness of the newborn. The little hats, diaper covers, and headbands are just too much. It is so fun coordinating this with mom and seeing her reaction upon seeing her new baby all dolled up.

My 9 Favorite Things About Photographing Newborns

#1. I love the feeling of completing a newborn shoot. It is one of the most challenging types of photography. A lot goes into knowing how to safely and successfully pose a newborn baby. Through the years I’ve developed my bag of tricks. I like to think of myself as a baby whisperer ☺. Nothing compares to the feeling walking away knowing you have a beautiful gallery of photos to edit and deliver to your clients.
