Taking Mini Sessions from Mediocre to Magical {Sekrit Theater Photos}

Before I begin writing about the magic of of the Sekrit Theater,  I’m going to do a little plug for my bi-monthly blog circle! I just love collaborating with other photographers. I’m with a special group of photographer friends this week – we are linking to one another’s posts, so you can check out some inspiring work!

This week, I’m linking to a talented  Annika Bloch and her post is about fine art child photography in Central London. Make sure to look for the link at the bottom of this blog post!
Now onto my Owen the Bus story. ☺

And now, let’s talk about magic in mini sessions! I’ll be completely honest – the words Mini Session make me cringe. The reason is magical light is hard to achieve during a mini session.  Beautiful light for a photo session happens the hour the sun rises or the hour the sun sets. Lining up a bunch of families for mini session usually involves choosing the safest light that will stay consistent throughout the hours of shooting. In other words, setting up in the shade. Flat, safe, boring light.

Back light, side light, and even direct light during the golden hour all add drama and intrigue to the photo session. Shade is safe but doesn’t add a lot of depth.

On the other hand, I see the appeal of mini sessions. The shortened, usually less expensive photo session is perfect for a family looking for a few good photos to document the ages of their kiddos, and achieve a couple of family portraits where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling.

The question is, with dramatic light taken out of the picture, how do we add the magic back in?

The answer that makes the most sense to me is creating or finding a fantastic setting for family photos. Something unique and out of the ordinary…something magical of course! As a creative person, figuring out this magical background is just as exciting as finding the pretty light. In the past I’ve set up a pumpkin stand, brought in live bunnies for Easter photos, and even borrowed a VW bus for some summer themed photos!

But, one of my favorite settings for mini sessions is the Sekrit Theater in Austin.  When I came across a few photos from the Sekrit Theater on instagram, I immediately started investigating and was delighted to find out that photographers are allowed and even encouraged at this hot spot! It didn’t take me long to book it last fall for mini sessions, which sold out like hot cakes!

There are so many fun options that are available with this fun setting!

Like dressing up a little more than you typically would for a photo session!

I love the leading lines the glass house provides and the ease of this pose for a tween girl

It is the perfect space to take some really fun, and unique photos of mom and dad together!

Natural smiles on kiddos is easy to achieve because it is such a fun and unusual place! They love it!

You can’t beat the dichotomy of a man made structure covered with over-grown ivy!

Black and white translates beautifully from color photos because of the contrasting black and white floors

And finally, the texture of the old building with flaky paint and the brick inside provides so many opportunities for unique photos!

So I guess the secret is out! I’m a huge fan of photographing families at the Sekrit Theater! Located in East Austin, the Sekrit Theater website describes the unique space perfectly:

“Abandoned Garden Photography Space…..And other Sekrit Endeavors
Explore, discover, create, capture some magic… this space is designed by artists, architects, craftsmen, wanderers, dreamers, and makers.  Be a part of the Sekrit.
We welcome all who wander, dream, and inspire.  Creators of art, magic, and mystery are the driving force of this Eastside gem.”

It may come as no surprise that this amazing place books up quickly!

Over the summer I secured a date and time for fall mini sessions to be held in mid-October. If you are interested in finding out more details about the mini sessions and possibly even booking one, make sure to sign up to receive the email! The email to book will go out in early September. Sessions are limited.

I’m going to end this post with one final, and ironic thought. Even though the setting of the Sekrit Theater is why I love it so much…the light there is also beautiful and dramatic. Go figure! It’s a win-win all around!

Oh and don’t forget to follow along the blog circle. There’s a group of five of us this month, and next up is my friend Annika Bloch .  Click the link to check out her blog post and stunning work: Fine art child photography in Central London.
